HARARE – A 70-year-old grandmother shot by a police officer who was allegedly aiming for the tyres of a pirate taxi is to receive US$3,500 compensation from the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Evas Mashingaidze, of Chitungwiza, was a passenger in the taxi when she was shot on the arm in 2019.
She sued the police for medical expenses, shock, pain and suffering.
On Tuesday, during a pre-trial conference, the ZRP agreed to pay Mashingaidze US$3,500 compensation, while insisting that the police officer who shot her acted lawfully.
Mashingaidze was represented by Darlington Marange of Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum.
