HARARE – Zimbabwe has deported three Chinese nationals after they were filmed torturing a mine worker in Bindura, Mashonaland Central.
Gung Wai Lam, Xiang Nan, and Liu Xuehua were all linked to the incident where a worker at Makanga Mine in Bindura had his hands tied by rope to the bucket of a front-end loader before he was hoisted into the air as punishment for allegedly stealing diesel.
Lam was on an investor resident permit due to expire in March next year, Nan had a business visitors entry certificate while Xuehua, an engineer for a company called Crownewald Minerals, had a temporary entry permit valid until October 24 this year, government spokesman Ndavaningi Mangwana said.
A video of the torture which circulated online had caused outrage, with the Zimbabwe Miners Federation calling it “appalling, vile, inhumane and savage.”
In May, another Chinese national shot three mine workers in Zhombe, killing one.
Cai Yulong, 58, had accused Goni Goni, 23, John Muchawaya, 34, and Lovemore Mapfanya, 20, of encroaching into his Blue Belle Mine through an underground tunnel.
Miners unions say abuses by Chinese miners are rampant.
