HARARE – Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) boss Justice Priscilla Chigumba was unhurt after her vehicle collided with a fuel tanker near Chinhoyi on Sunday.
The ZEC chairperson was returning from Chinhoyi on the notoriously bumpy and potholed Chirundu-Harare highway when her Toyota Land Cruiser collided with the heavy truck. Two other vehicles were caught up in the accident.
Information secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana blamed the truck driver for causing the collision, but a witness speaking on video at the crash site said Chigumba’s Land Cruiser “caused the accident.”
Mangwana said: “On Sunday Justice Chigumba was involved in an accident on her way from Chinhoyi when a haulage tanker crashed into three vehicles including hers.
“There were no fatalities from the accident and Justice Chigumba was not injured.”
A video from the accident scene showed Chigumba’s vehicle with extensive damage on the right side, a second vehicle which landed on its roof and the tanker which came to a stop off the road.
A witness on the short video points at Chigumba’s vehicle and says “that’s the car that caused the accident.”
