HARARE – A woman injured by a closing automated sliding door has sued hardware store Halsted Builders Express for US$35,000.
Runako Punungwe says she suffered leg injuries and now wears an ankle guard following the March 3 incident.
Punungwe says her doctor has not ruled out the possibility of a permanent disability.
In a High Court filing on Monday, Punungwe is claiming US$15,000 for pain and suffering, US$10,000 for loss of amenities, US$2,000 for mental anguish, humiliation and embarrassment.
She also wants US$500 for disfigurement, US$2,010 for medical expenses and US$5,000 for future medical expenses.
Punungwe says in court papers that she was waiting in line to sanitise her hands before entering the Halsted shop in Borrowdale when the sliding door slammed into her.
“The accident caused Punungwe to sustain injuries, pain and suffering, loss of amenities, financial loss in the form of medical expenses and anticipated future medical expenses as well as legal costs,” her lawyers said.
She claims the injury has led to many other complications to her health.
“As a result of the accident caused by the Halsted Builders Express’ negligence, Punungwe suffered mild swelling of the left ankle joint region, tenderness over anterolateral aspect of ankle joint line and tenderness over base of fifth metatarsal,” the lawsuit says.
“Punungwe continues to discover more injuries as she continues to go for medical examinations and check-ups.She has endured and continues to endure pain and suffering…”
