HARARE – Former Bikita West MP and convicted rapist Munyaradzi Kereke is back in jail, this time accused of attempting to swindle the City of Harare’s pension fund of US$400,000.
Kereke was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission together with Everisto Rukasha, the former CEO of the Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society.
The duo appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo on Friday and were remanded in custody to November 13 for their bail hearing. The magistrate asked for written submissions from state and defence lawyers.
The National Prosecuting Authority alleges that Kereke, jailed for 10 years in 2016 for rape before his early release on good behaviour in 2021, connived with Rukasha to falsely claim that he was owed US$400,000 from his 2014 sale of the Fortress Hospital in Ruwa to the pension fund.
Prosecutors say Kereke was paid his US$800,000 asking price in 2014. Following his release from jail, he allegedly sent a new invoice to the pension fund claiming he was still owed US$400,000, and the fund paid him US$120,000 before the accounts department questioned the payments, leading to his arrest.
