HARARE – A 57-year-old Harare school teacher has been slapped with a 15-year prison sentence after being found guilty for raping his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter.
Aleck Masomera was jailed after a full trial during which he denied allegations.
He will however serve 13 years effective after two years of his sentence were set aside on condition of good behaviour.
In convicting him, presiding magistrate Letwin Rwodzi said Masomera deserved a lengthy custodial sentence because acted contrary to what is expected of him in the community.
According to the State, Masomera was assisting the girl with extra lessons.
Court heard during trial that sometime in July last year, the minor enrolled with Masomera for extra lessons.
It was the State’s case that Masomera then started proposing love to the girl, but the minor turned him down.
On the day he raped the girl, Masomera entered his bedroom from where he then summoned the girl who entered and sat on the bed next to him.
He then raped her once before setting her free, court established.
The girl then reported the matter with her grandmother, leading to Masomera’s arrest.
