HARARE – Successful Zimbabwe football coaching expat Kalisto Pasuwa has been appointed Malawi national football team interim head coach with immediate effect.

His appointment was announced in a statement following a virtual meeting on Friday by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee.

The meeting had been convened to discuss urgent issues aimed as transforming Malawian football.

Pasuwa’s appointment follows the sacking of former Flames international, Patrick Mabedi due to the team’s poor performance and failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The Committee resolved to ratify the decision of the FAM Emergency Committee terminating the contract of the Senior Men’s National Football Coach taken in line with provisions of Article 46 of FAM Statutes (2019),” read the statement.

“The Committee resolved to approve the recommendation to appoint an Interim Technical Panel comprising of Calisto Pasuwa as Head of Technical Panel…”

Pasuwa, who moved to Malawi following a successful stint with Zimbabwe football giants Dynamos as a player and head coach after hanging his boots, is a highly rated football mentor in Malawian topflight  football.

He has won four consecutive league titles with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC as head coach, a feat he was repeating in the neighbouring country having clinched the Zimbabwean premiership title with Dynamos four times in a row before.

As Flames boss, Pasuwa would be deputised by Peter Mponda and Pritchard Mwansa as first and second assistants respectively, while Kinnah Phiri and Young Chimodzi have been picked as advisors.
