MASVINGO – Tributes are being paid to prominent Masvingo businessman Tanda Tavaruva, who died on Monday.
Tavarura owned the popular bus company, Mhunga.
He was 84.
Tavarura died at his home in the exclusive neighbourhood of Rhodhene in Masvingo after battling high blood pressure and diabetes since 2012, according to his son, Nyararai.
Born in Nerupiri in Gutu, Tavarura is survived by his wife Pelagia and six children. One of his five sons, Godwin, is expected to miss his burial due to the coronavirus lockdown in South Africa, where he lives.
In online tributes, Mhunga was variously described as a “legendary entrepreneur who changed the face of Masvingo” and a “sweet old man”.
“He moved his business to Zimbabwe from Zambia out of sheer patriotism, and watched the business environment desecrate all he worked for,” said one Twitter user.
Tavarura sponsored Masvingo United, which played in the Premier Soccer League between 2005 and 2011.
