BULAWAYO – A man was beaten to death for attempting to place a bet using a torn $2 note, police said.
Police are holding two suspects over Qhubekani Moyo’s death in Fort Rixon, Insiza district, at around 2AM on Sunday.
Inspector Loveness Mangena of Matabeleland South police said Moyo was gambling with Nyasha Muzungu, 26, and Thokozani Nkomo, 19, behind a local shop at around 10PM on Sunday when a row erupted over Moyo’s money.
“Nkomo and Muzungu refused to accept the torn money but Moyo insisted that the money could be used which resulted in an altercation. They then abandoned the game and left for their homes while still arguing about the torn money,” Mangena said.
The rowing trio, police said, met Moyo’s friend along the way and he defused the quarrel by offering to take him in for the night and calm him down.
Mangena said Moyo decided to set off for his home at around 2AM and was confronted by Nkomo and Muzungu who were armed with stones and logs.
Moyo called out for help but by the time his friend and other neighbours got to him, he was barely alive. Nkomo and Muzungu had disappeared into the night.
He was confirmed dead on arrival at the local clinic.
