HARARE – A 47-year-old Harare man has been arrested after being found with a piece of railway track at his home.
Maxwell Dzawanda of Hopley on Monday made a brief appearance before Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti and was remanded in custody to Tuesday for his bail application.
He was not asked to plead.
He faces a mandatory 10-year sentence if convicted under section 38 of the Railways Act.
Owen Safuli, for the National Prosecuting Authority, said police raided Dzawanda’s residence after a tip-off that he was in possession of a piece railway track.
Detectives working with a loss control officer from the National Railways of Zimbabwe allegedly found the railway track placed on three boulders inside Dzawanda’s carpentry shop.
The 30kg piece of rail tracks is worth US$14,400, the court heard.
Removing or displacing railway tracks attracts a sentence of 10 years to life.
