HARARE – The MDC-T party has recalled its deputy leader Thokozani Khupe and Nomvula Mguni from parliament.
Khupe was suspended by the party on January 12 pending a hearing into allegations of besmirching party leader Douglas Mwonzora with allegations that he stole party funds.
Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda wrote to Khupe and Mguni – both proportional representation MPs – this week informing them that he had received a letter from the party recalling them.
Mguni replaced Priscilla Misihairabwi as the proportional representation MP for Bulawayo after the latter was posted as ambassador to Sweden last year,
MDC-T spokesman Witness Dube said: “I can confirm that we have so far recalled Mguni and Khupe from the lower house. I believe letters will go out soon, if they haven’t, in respect of others in the senate.”
Khupe addressed a news conference in Harare on Tuesday where she insisted that she was the MDC-T acting president. She has held the stance since January 21 when she announced a split in the party, even as declared herself the interim party leader. She argued that Mwonzora automatically expelled himself when he, in a letter to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, declared himself as leader of the MDC Alliance.
Khupe accused Mudenda of taking sides and favouring Mwonzora merely because she is a woman. Ironically, Khupe entered parliament after the MDC-T party recalled MDC Alliance lawmakers.
She vowed to fight the recall in court.
