HWANGE – A Hwange magistrate has slapped a local teacher with a one-year jail sentence following his conviction for sitting for public examinations last November on behalf of three students.
Mkululi Moyo, 48, will however serve eight months effective after the magistrate suspended four months of his sentence on condition of good behaviour.
As part of his modus operandi, court heard during trial, Moyo connived with an invigilator, one Mark Bhebhe who is yet to be arrested, to commit the crime.
It is the state’s case that Moyo unlawfully and intentionally sat for the November 2023 Maths paper 2 examination with the intention of impersonating Hwange high school students.
Bhebhe was given the written answer scripts and gave them to the three candidates who only entered their personal details.
The invigilator was given a reward of US$150.
“The matter came to light in December when Zimsec examiners detected that the handwriting on the personal details section was different from the handwriting in the main body of the answer script,” said the National Prosecuting Authority.
It was discovered that the candidates were from Hwange High School.
The investigating team then visited Hwange High school on March 22, 2024.
They showed the headmaster the answer scripts and the headmaster confirmed that the handwriting on the answer scripts belonged to Moyo.
He was subsequently arrested.
