BUHERA – A Buhera woman faces murder after she allegedly crashed her two infant sons’ heads against a rock, killing one in the process and severely injuring the other, later telling neighbours she was commanded by “a voice during prayer” to kill the minors.
Mary Rukobo, 24, according to police spokesman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confessed to committing the shock act to fellow villagers before she was arrested.
She allegedly killed her two months old baby on the spot while the two-year-old is currently battling for life in hospital.
“Police in Muzokomba have arrested Mary Rukobo (24) in connection with a case of murder which occurred on 19/01/23 at Mashangana Village, Buhera.
“The suspect allegedly confessed to some villagers that she crashed the heads of her two kids against a rock several times during a prayer session after hearing a voice to kill all the kids.
“One of the kids, Calvin Maputsa (2 months) sustained head injuries and died on the spot, while another kid (2) sustained a swollen head and was admitted at a Murambinda Mission Hospital,” said Nyathi on Twitter.
In a related incident, police also arrested one Gugulethu Khumalo, 18, of Tshongogwana Village, Lupane on allegations of killing her seven weeks old baby girl.
For the act, Khumalo has been charged with infanticide.
Nyathi said the infant was found dead in a bedroom hut last Thursday with froth coming through the nose.
“Two hammers were found on top of blankets next to the body,” said the police spokesperson.
