HARARE – Harare Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango has been granted bail by the High Court after spending nearly two months in remand prison over tender fraud.

Chisango was ordered to deposit $1,000 with the clerk of court, to continue residing at his given address and not to interfere with state witnesses.

He was also ordered to report to the police once a week and to surrender his passport.

The top municipal executive faces charges of unprocedural awarding of a $9,2 tender to Juluka Enndo Joint Venture, a company owned by businessman Moses Mpofu, without following due process.

He faces criminal abuse of duty charges.

Allegations are that by so doing, Chisango disregarded an earlier decision to disqualify Juluka Enndo Joint Venture for having failed to meet the bid requirements.

Mpofu is also languishing in remand prison together with business partner Mike Chimombe over a botched goat supply tender by government. The pair also faces charges related to the Harare streetlighting scandal.

Chisango is jointly charged with Artkins Mandaza, 42.
