HARARE – At least 15 people died while 85 others were injured in 132 road traffic accidents that were recorded during this year’s Heroes, and Defence Forces Day holidays.
Heroes Day was commemorated on 14 August this year while Defence Forces Day was on 15 August.
In a statement Wednesday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said there was however a decrease in the number of accidents with 132 recorded compared to the 163 experienced last year.
He said there was also an increase in the number of fatal road traffic accidents – from 4 in 2022 to 12 in 2023 – while the number of those injured increased from 29 to 85 this year.
The high-ranking police officer called on motorists to observe road rules in order to avoid accidents.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it’s not safe to do so,” Nyathi said.
“Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers or goods on the roads.
“Drivers should not speed in situations which are not safe to do so. Above all, drivers should adhere to all road rules and regulations in order to curb the continuous loss of lives through road traffic accidents.”
