NGEZI – FC Platinum needed a penalty shootout to subdue Ngezi Platinum as they clinched the Chibuku Super Cup at Mandava on Sunday.

Shot stropper Petros Mhari saved from Marvelous Mukumba and Norman Mapeza’s men converted all their spot-kicks to win 5-3.

Innocent Mucheneka, Ralph Kawondera, Brian Banda, Nomore Chinyerere and Gift Mbweti all found a way past Nelson Chadya.

Qadr Amini converted Ngezi’s first spot-kick but when Mukumba fluffed his lines for the second, Ngezi were always up against it although Keith Murera and Denver Mukamba converted to keep their hopes flickering.

“In the first half we were the better side with a few chances from distance. Ngezi came very strong in the second half and gave us a good game and I’m glad to have won the lottery at the end,” Mapeza said.

Now one of Zimbabwe’s most decorated coaches, Mapeza described the cup triumph as “massive”.

FC Platinum may have started brightly but Ngezi came closest to opening the deadline when Anelka Chivandire denied by the crossbar after 17 minutes.

Chadya then denied FC Platinum when he made a sprawling dive to deny Panashe Mutimbanyoka who was clean through just after the half-hour mark.

McDonald Makuwe’s long-range shot effort was brilliantly saved by Mhari shortly after halftime before referee Lawrence Zimondi waved away a strong penalty shout by Ngezi after Donald Dzingayi appeared to pull Bruno Mtigo to the floor.

Mukamba could have won it late on for Ngezi after beating the offside trap. Instead of taking the shot he attempted a pass to Nyasha Chintuli and FC Platinum had recovered to thwart the danger.

Ngezi coach Rodwell Dhlakama said: “We controlled the game but it’s unfortunate we didn’t convert the half chances that came our way. We take the good performance from this game. Sometimes you need luck, if luck eludes you there’s nothing you can do.”
