HARARE – Harare dealer and socialite Mike Chimbombe was arrested on Monday accused of defrauding a man of US$16,000 in a botched transaction for a housing stand.

Chimombe, 41, was grabbed by detectives from his Borrowdale Brooke home in Harare after initially resisting arrest by uniformed officers shortly after 8AM.

Police are also holding his alleged accomplices Steve Chimombe and Hermysh Katsande, who face several counts of fraud.

National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi’s phone rang unanswered over several hours on Monday morning.

Law enforcement sources however told ZimLive that the former Affirmative Action Group president is accused of selling a non-existent stand to a Harare businessman.

The alleged victim of the scam reportedly paid US$16,900 for the stand in Tynwald, before discovering that he had been duped.

Chimombe’s camp will tell investigators that it was his employees who performed the con and not him, ZimLive understands.

He was still in police custody on Monday afternoon.

Chimombe has been photographed in the company of President Emmerson Mnangagwa on several occasions.
