HARARE – Sports and recreation minister Kirsty Coventry has granted renowned Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athlete Themba Gorimbo’s request to display Zimbabwe national colours in his many bouts abroad.
Sports and Recreation Commission chairperson, Gerald Mlotshwa said in a statement on Thursday the approval was granted by Coventry in her capacity as minister.
“The Sports and Recreation Commission is pleased to advise that the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, honourable Kirsty Coventry, has authorised you to wear the national colours of Zimbabwe during Mixed Martial Arts competitions and related events.
“The approved colours are as presented in your application, above. Kindly note that any change in the kit will require our prior approval.
“The SRC wishes you all the success in your sporting endeavors,” said Mlotshwa.
The approval comes after Gorimbo submitted an application on February 22, 2024, requesting authorization to don the national colours while competing as a Zimbabwean MMA athlete.
Gorimbo expressed his sincere gratitude for the SRC’s decision to allow him to proudly represent Zimbabwe with its national colours.
He acknowledged the significance of wearing his country’s flag on his fight kit, particularly as an athlete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
“I am truly grateful and happy my voice has been heard and I get to have my country flag on my fight kit going forward.
“This is big. As an athlete in the UFC it feels good to see your country’s flag on your gear.
“This is part of the story and history. Thank you to everyone who played a part,” he said.
Gorimbo, as a professional athlete, had on several occasions raised interest to don Zimbabwean national colours on his gear on the international stage.
