HARARE – The comedian Baba Tencen was arrested by South African police for forgery and immigration offences.
A video posted online on Sunday showed the comedian, whose real name is Pepukai Zvemhari, being led away by police officers following a confrontation with a group of Zimbabweans.
It is not apparent in the video where the incident took place, although it has been claimed on social media that it was in the town of Springs, 50km east of Johannesburg.
In the video posted on Facebook and Twitter, Baba Tencen is accused of “stealing” from people after promising to secure them work visas. He is also accused of putting fake immigration stamps on passports purporting to have extended the stay of their owners in the neighbouring country.
Reports claim the comedian was arrested with a briefcase full of passports. ZimLive has not been able to independently verify the claims.
Questions left for Baba Tencen on his social media accounts had not been answered at the time of publication.
