HARARE – A Central Intelligence Organisation agent high on cannabis was arrested after he fired several gunshots into the air to celebrate the New Year.
Tanfany Teddwell Chadomunhu, 25, has been charged with reckless discharging of a firearm over the incident at the headquarters of the CIO Counter Intelligence unit on Radnor Close in Harare’s Emerald Hills.
Chadomunhu appeared before Harare magistrate Babra Mateko on January 2 and was remanded in custody to January 15 after being denied bail.
Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti told the court that Chadomunhu was on guard duties armed with an AK47 rifle when he got caught up in the New Year excitement.
“On January 1, 2021, at round 12.10AM, accused who was roving in the premise fired 11 shots into the air and this prompted his workmates who were inside the offices to suspect him to have discharged his service rifle,” Mutsokoti alleged.
The prosecutor said Chadomunhu’s boss Last Ngwenya was called to the scene and arrived a few minutes later.
Ngwenya disarmed Chadomunhu, and discovered his AK47 rifle now had two rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. One spent cartridge was allegedly found at the site where he allegedly fired his gun.
“After disarming the accused, the complainant (Ngwenya) searched him and recovered a sachet of dagga from his left trousers pocket and a police report was made,” the prosecutor added.
Chadomunhu, of Zengeza 2 in Chitungwiza, appeared in court without a lawyer.
