HARARE – The Chibuku Super Cup gets a new winner this year after Herentals and Bulawayo Chiefs football clubs Sunday both booked dream spots in the final of the prestigious tournament.
In semi-final matches played Sunday, Herentals beat cup holders FC Platinum 4-3 on penalties after the two sides had ended the match tied on 1-1.
The Black Rhinos-Bulawayo Chiefs match was also decided through spot kicks with the Bulawayo side progressing on a 5-4 score line.
The match had ended goalless.
None of the surprise packages have ever won any trophy in the country at senior level, let alone the country’s premier knockout tournament.
Fading local football giants Caps United, Dynamos Highlanders all fell by the wayside when they got knocked out in the previous stages of the tournament.
Winners of the Chibuku Super Cup trophy get a ticket to represent the country in the CAF inter-club competition.
However, Zimbabwean teams remain banned from taking part in international football competitions owing to government interference into the running of the domestic game.
