BULAWAYO – CCTV footage has been used to identify and nail a DHL security guard who would occasionally break into offices he was guarding to steal cash totalling US$1,815.
Malvin Chimange, 26, a resident of Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb, was arrested for three cases of unlawful entry and theft at the DHL main offices in Bulawayo.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said Chimange committed the offences between 3 July and 15 August this year.
“The accused person was breaking into the offices using unknown means to open. While inside, he was targeting cash from different offices,” he said.
“Firstly, he stole US$315 from the first office; the money was inside a drawer.
“He went on to the next office and took US$600. On another date, the accused person used the same style of breaking in and stole US$900 and ZAR2400 from another office.”
He said CCTV footage was viewed leading to the arrest of the thieving security.
He added that a total of US$1,460 and ZAR2,400 was recovered from the stolen amount.
Inspector Ncube urged companies to exercise due diligence when hiring people to guard their premises.
