BULAWAYO – Chicken Inn were toppled by CAPS United at the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday after going down 2-0 to Highlanders in the Bulawayo derby.
Brian Banda fired Highlanders ahead with a rasping shot a minute after halftime when teed up by Tinashe Makanda.
Highlanders doubled the lead on 54 minutes through their in-form marksman, Prince Dube.
In Harare, CAPS United came from a goal down to beat Triangle 2-1.
Triangle were given the advantage when second half substitute Kelvin Ndebele brought down Timothy January in the box in the 70th minute.
January picked himself up and fired the visitors ahead, but their lead lasted just six minutes as Ronald Chitiyo headed the hosts level from a Phineas Bamusi cross.
CAPS United won it at the death as Ndebele’s corner kick was helped on by Bamusi before Goodwin Goriyathi fired in from close range.
United now top the standings with 44 points leaving Chicken Inn rooted to 41 points, the same number as FC Platinum who were held 0-0 in Zvishavane by relegation-threatened TelOne.
Bulawayo Chiefs made a case for survival with a battling home win over fellow strugglers Harare City at Luveve.
Chiefs won a freekick for a foul on Farau Matare on 52 minutes. Shephard Mhlanga’s kick into the visitors’ box was met by Isaac Asiamah Badu whose header found the net.
The win leaves Chiefs just a point from safety with 24 points. City dropped into the relegation zone after TelOne’s 0-0 draw with champions FC Platinum lifted them to safety.
