TelOne 2-0 CAPS United

GWERU – After watching title rivals FC Platinum suffer a shock 1-0 defeat at home to relegation-threatened Bulawayo Chiefs on Saturday, CAPS United had a chance to go five-points clear at the summit on the road to struggling TelOne 24 hours later.

But the Premier League leaders’ best laid plans came undone in a space of five forgettable first half minutes as Rahman Gumbo’s TelOne hauled themselves out of relegation.

After a strong start, United were twice denied by the woodwork. Valentine Ndaba’s delivery from a corner kissed the crossbar in the 7th minute before Blessing Sarupinda was denied by the frame of the goal after 34 minutes.

A defensive lapse was ruthlessly punished by King Nadolo three minutes after Sarupinda’s miss and TelOne were out of sight two minutes before halftime as Fredrick Muza fired in the Gweru club’s second.

Chicken Inn, third in the league, will get a chance to close the gap to United when they face Triangle midweek.

Joey Antipas’ men can climb over FC Platinum into second, two points adrift of United, with a win.

At Rufaro, Highlanders continued their unbeaten run under their Dutch coach Hendrik Pieter De Jongh with a battling draw against Dynamos, who drew their fifth match on the spin.

Highlanders had trouble entering the stadium after Dynamos marshals kept them waiting for several minutes, ratcheting up tensions which later played out in an ill-tempered encounter.

Tinashe Makanda thought he had won it for Highlanders when he found the target in the 71st minute, but Dynamos restored parity when Evans Katema headed in Jarrison Selemani’s free-kick seven minutes from the end.

Katema earlier hit the crossbar from a header, again set up by Selemani from a freekick.
