HARARE – A video has emerged showing a police outrider in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s motorcade assaulting a motorist.

The video, posted online, was filmed by a woman in an office block across the street as Mnangagwa’s long convoy made its way down a street in central Harare.

The police officer, with his blue-lights bike parked slightly off the road, is seen breaking the driver’s window of a vehicle and taking several swings at the driver, who has not been identified.

A large crowd can be seen watching the assault.

A woman is heard on the 22-second video saying: “I don’t like Mnangagwa’s government.”

The Information Ministry released a statement which appeared to accuse the motorist of blocking Mnangagwa’s motorcade. It did not condemn the assault.

“In the last week, there has been two incidents where two motorists have obstructed the presidential motorcade therefore endangering the principal, the public, the escorting security and themselves. May we encourage commuting motorists to cooperate with the law enforcement support team,” the ministry said.
