A POLICE constable is facing a disciplinary hearing over claims he allowed a campaign van for the MDC Alliance to enter a police station.
Constable Tomy was on guard duties at the Mashonaland West Camps and Hostels in Chegutu when he allegedly permitted an Isuzu pick-up truck emblazoned with stickers of MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa to be driven into the camp on July 8.
“Constable Tomy unlawfully permitted an MDC campaign vehicle Isuzu pick-up with stickers stuck on it without booking it in the OB (Occurrence Book) or asking its purpose into the police premises,” according to a notice of the charges seen by ZimLive.com.
“After entering into Orange Groove Camp, the occupants of the vehicle started throwing MDC fliers all over. Chief Inspector Ncube informed Sergeant Major Mutusva who then caused the vehicle to vacate the premises.”
The constable is charged with the offence of “omitting or neglecting to perform any duty, or performing any duty in an improper manner” under the Police Act. He could be suspended or dismissed from the force if found guilty in the internal police disciplinary hearing.
Earlier in May, the MDC Alliance protested that Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa had been allowed to put up a billboard inside Mabelreign Police Station in Harare. The billboard was not taken down, despite the protests.
