NKAYI – In an unfortunate incident that happened in Nkayi, a 1 year 5 month old baby girl suffered a painful death after a house in which she was left sleeping was gutted by fire.
The incident, according to the police weekend, happened at a homestead in Village 3, Drommoland, Inyathi, Nkayi on Friday.
Police confirmed they have opened investigations into circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Added the police on its X handle, “The incident occurred when the house in which the baby was sleeping in caught fire. The cause of fire is yet to be established. The mother had left the victim lying on the bed while accompanying the victim’s brother to school.”
Incidents involving the death of minors in fire accidents at home are common in Zimbabwe.
In November 2023, two minors aged 4 and 1 year, six months died Monday while the third, a 3-year-old sustained burns in a fire incident at a Chimanimani village.
Also in October 2022, two infants aged 7 months and 2 years were burnt to death in separate home fire incidents that happened in Harare and Shamva, respectively.
A lot of the accidental fires are caused by parents who would have left burning candles inside homes where children would be sleeping.
