BULAWAYO – Police have recovered the bodies of two men who drowned at Matopo Mission Dam on January 24.

The men, who have not been named, had been engaged by the school to carry out repairs to dormitories damaged in a fire incident last year.

Gardson Sibanda, the school’s headmaster, said after knocking off for the day at around 7PM, the men decided to cool down by swimming at the school’s dam but they quickly ran into trouble.

“Efforts to rescue them were fruitless and the matter was urgently reported to Matopo police,” Sibanda said in a statement on Tuesday.

The rescue efforts were abandoned on January 24 after it became dark and they resumed on the next day.

The police sub-aqua unit from Fairbridge in Bulawayo managed to retrieve the two bodies which were conveyed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem.

“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of sorrow that we convey our condolences to the bereaved families,” Sibanda added.
