GWERU – A Chinese mine supervisor filmed aiming a gun at an irate worker who was demanding his wages has been arrested, police said on Thursday.
Police have also arrested the employee, Kholwani Dube, 38, for stabbing Liu Haifeng in the January 21 incident at Bijou Farm in Gweru.
National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Haifeng faces charges of pointing a firearm and Dube had been charged with assault after stabbing the Chinese national on the leg.
Haifeng is a supervisor at the mine operated by Ming Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments.
The company said Dube had been suspended for disregarding instructions from his supervisors when he drove an excavator towards Haifeng.
In a video of the incident circulating online, Dube is heard repeatedly shouting “I want my money” – suggesting the dispute was about outstanding wages.
Another video shows Dube lying face down with at least three Chinese men on top of him, one of the men pinning him down with their knee while sticking a gun to his head.
The videos have caused outrage online as they follow a pattern of reported abuses against locals by Chinese employers, especially in the mining sector.
