HARARE – Caps United have crashed out of the Chibuku Super Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties to Ngezi Platinum in a quarter-final clash played at Baobab stadium on Saturday.
The match had ended 1-1 during regulation time after goals by Marvelous Mukumba for Ngezi Platinum in the first half and Warriors defender Godknows Murwira for Caps United at the hour mark.
But it took the dreaded penalty shootout to separate the two sides with Ngezi Platinum converting four of its spot kicks while Caps United managed to convert three.
In another Chibuku Super Cup clash, Manica Diamonds beat FC Platinum 1-0 at Sakubva stadium to dump the Zvishavane side out of the country’s premier knockout competition.
Tawanda Macheke got the priceless goal for Manica Diamonds after 17 minutes and they held on to it until the last whistle.
It was Manica Diamonds’ second defeat of their highly rated premiership opponents who they beat by a similar margin in a league clash only seven days ago.
While FC Platinum could still dream of catching up with league leaders Simba Bhora in the premiership race, the defeat marks end of season for Caps United who have nothing left to aspire for except finishing the league in a respectable position.
The once dominant green shirted outfit is a distant 16 points from Simba Bhora with just eight matches left to end the season.
On Sunday, Highlanders travel to Simba Bhora hoping to upstage their tough opponents and progress to the semi-final of the competition.
The clash between Dynamos and Yadah was postponed owing to Dynamos’ commitment in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Dynamos are the Chibuku Super Cup defending champions.
