HARARE – Zimbabwe league giants Dynamos began their renewed hunt for continental glory with a 1-0 victory over Zambia’s Zesco United in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie played at Gaborone National Stadium in Botswana on Sunday.
Star midfielder Tanaka Shandirwa’s header at the half hour mark gave the Glamour Boys the slender advantage to take to the reverse fixture in Ndola next Saturday.
“It’s always gratifying when you get the maximum points. It was a difficult encounter, but credit to the boys for grinding out the much-needed result,” interim coach Lloyd Chigowe told the media after the match.
“My clarion call to the boys now is not to be fooled by this win and rest on their laurels because one thing for sure is that Zesco will be coming back in full force and them being at home this time around makes the puzzle very difficult for us.”
Dynamos have a lot to prove this football season after seeing their 2024 Zimbabwe premiership campaign almost slip off their grasp.
Meanwhile, in a Chibuku Super Cup First Round fixture played at Barbourfields on Sunday, Highlanders thrashed Green Fuel 3-0 to progress to the next round.
Melikhaya Ncube beat the referee’s half time whistle with the first goal while Nqobile Ndlovu doubled Bosso’s advantage with an effort inside the box 64 minutes into the match.
Marvellous Chigumira hammered the final nail on the fuel makers’ coffin with a third one just 11 minutes left on the referee’s clock.
Manica Diamonds also won by an identical margin over Chegutu Pirates at Sakubva stadium.
The match between Dynamos and ZPC Kariba was postposed due to the defending champions’ international commitment.
On Saturday, FC Platinum beat TelOne 1-0 to progress while Caps United also triumphed 1-0 over Bikita Minerals.
