HARARE – Leading marksman William Manondo scored his tenth goal of the season to give Caps United a priceless victory over deposed league leaders FC Platinum and an astounding twist to the current premiership campaign.
Apart from being the headline fixture of Week 22 of the league race, the outcome also meant something to the rest of the title contenders.
For Caps United, it came as a relief for a team that has lost its glory as a domestic league giant following a string of poor results in the campaign.
FC Platinum, on their part, were fighting to regain premiership top spot after they were dethroned on Saturday by new league leaders Simba Bhora, an underrated outfit that has had the temerity to challenge for Zimbabwe’s top domestic football prize.
For other title contenders, the outcome was welcome as it meant the former league leaders dropped points and allowed them to narrow the points deficit with the Zvishavane side.
In other fixtures, Highlanders kept their hopes of clinching the title alive after two quick goals scored inside the first 10 minutes allowed them to subdue their hosts Chegutu Pirates on a 2-1 score line at Baobab.
Bosso did not waste time as they found the opener through Nqobile Ndlovu with just two minutes into the clash while Achford Faira doubled the visitors’ advantage 8 minutes later.
Chegutu Pirates found their face-saver at the stroke of full time.
At Barbourfields stadium, struggling giants Dynamos scored first with just a minute into the match but allowed opponents Bulawayo Chiefs to claw back with a Panashe Shoko equaliser after 25 minutes in what later settled the match as a contest.
At Sakubva, Bikita Minerals and league punchbags Arenel Movers played out a goalless draw while the match between minnows TelOne and basement side Hwange also produced a goalless stalemate at Bata stadium.
After Week 22 of the league race is done and dusted, Simba Bhora are now the new league leaders with 43 points.
FC Platinum dropped to second on 42 points.
Defending champions Ngezi Platinum are third on 37 while Highlanders jumped to number 4 with 36 points in the bag.
