HARARE – Police have so far arrested 7 075 motorists countrywide in an operation to deal with “lawlessness on the roads.”
Since Tuesday police have mounted roadblocks across the country in an inter-agency operation running from September 12 to 16.
The operation known as ‘Tame the Traffic Jungle’ has police, councils, Safety Council of Zimbabwe, ZIMRA, Central Vehicle Registration and other agencies participating.
The law enforcement agents are targeting vehicles not displaying number plates, vehicles picking up passengers at undesignated spots, broken down vehicles without proper signalling to other motorists like triangles, uninsured vehicles, and vehicles with illegal fittings like front bar lights.
In an update Friday, police said 3 308 vehicles were impounded for various traffic offences.
“Meanwhile, police reports that a total of 7 075 arrests have been effected during the on-going operation, “Tame the Traffic Jungle, 3 308 vehicles have been impounded for moving on the country’s roads with defects, while 223 vehicles have also been impounded for moving on the roads with no registration plates.
“The ZRP reiterates that this operation is not focusing on Harare only but in all the country’s provinces,” said police.
