HARARE – Opposition United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) leader Elisabeth Valerio has won her appeal against the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)’s decision to reject her nomination papers.
She now becomes the only female presidential candidate alongside 11 other male contestants who include incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa and fierce contender Nelson Chamisa, leader of CCC.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Wednesday, Valerio’s lawyer Alec Muchadehama said the politician is now going to be added to the list of nominees vying for the country’s top office.
“We had appealed against ZEC’s refusal to register president Valerio on the ballot paper.
“Our appeal was successful. The court ruled that what ZEC had done was incorrect.
“So, ZEC is supposed to take all necessary steps to make sure that she is registered on the ballot paper and be contesting on the election to be held on August 23,” Muchadehama said.
High Court judge, Samuel Deme presided over the appeal.
