HARARE – A former jailbird who benefited from a Presidential amnesty rolled out recently is back inside prison walls charged with several robbery and burglary cases.

Privilege Mapfumo, 32, appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanzavo Gofa facing two robbery counts and two counts of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances.

He was advised to seek bail at the High Court.

Mapfumo is being accused of breaking into a house in Ruwa October last year and robbing the home’s owner, one August Augustine Muchena at gunpoint.

He then allegedly stole four cell phones and 59 litres of petrol before making his escape.

On 9 October last year, Mapfumo allegedly broke into a house in Tafara, Mabvuku belonging to one Kunda Munemo.

He allegedly held Munemo at gunpoint and demanded US$4,000.

The State further alleges that on December 12 2022, Mapfumo broke into a shop at the Gazebo Shopping Centre in Mabvuku and stole cell phones worth over US$6,000.

He was then arrested and jailed before being pardoned by President Mnangagwa through amnesty.

A few days after his release, Mapfumo allegedly went back to his old ways and broke into a shop located at Gazebo shopping centre and stole clothes.

He allegedly went to one Virginia Makusha’s house while drunk and started banging on her door.

Makusha called the police who arrested him for criminal nuisance.

At the police station, police found him in possession of a fake Zimbabwe National Army ID.

Investigations revealed that Mapfumo was not a member of the ZNA but rather an ex-convict who was released from prison.

Further investigations revealed that he was involved in robbery and unlawful entry cases that were being investigated by CID Homicide and ZRP Mabvuku.
