BULAWAYO – A four-year-old child was killed in a three-vehicle collision which left 24 others injured near the Nkulumane Complex in Bulawayo on Tuesday morning, police said.
The vehicles collided at the traffic-light controlled intersection of Masiyephambili Road and Khami Road.
Bulawayo police spokesman Inspector Abednico Ncube said: “An open truck knocked a ZUPCO-registered kombi which rolled several times and hit another kombi which was on the road leading to the injury of 24 passengers.
“One child aged four died on the way to hospital while another passenger is critical at Mpilo Central Hospital. We are worried about the conduct of drivers and the speed at which they are traveling under the varying road conditions.”
Ncube said on Monday, an eight-year-old girl was knocked down by a speeding Nissan Caravan kombi while trying to cross a road near the New Magwegwe/Lobengula vegetable market.
Said Ncube: “The child was trying to cross the road due west after disembarking from another vehicle. As a result of the accident, she sustained various injuries and died on admission at Mpilo Central Hospital. The driver is facing charges of culpable homicide.
“We observe that most of these accidents are caused by human error which can be avoided. It’s typically speed and inattention. We urge motorists to apply themselves fully to save lives.”
