KWEKWE – Police have released 11 of the 16 Zanu PF youths arrested for allegedly killing a Citizens Coalition for Change supporter at a rally in Kwekwe on Sunday.
Five men were formerly charged with public violence and Mboneni Ncube’s murder on Tuesday.
Edmore Shoshera, 30, Albert Maketo Tembo, 29, Percy Mukwaturi, 38, Talent Imbayago, 28, and Panashe Makuvaza were not asked to plead when they appeared before Kwekwe magistrate Florence Nago, who remanded them in custody to March 15.
A postmortem has been ordered into the cause of Ncube’s death. Prosecutor say he was stabbed at least twice with a sharp object.
Prosecutor Ethel Bhumure said the five, acting in connivance, attacked the CCC rally as party leader Nelson Chamisa was in the middle of his speech. They threw stones, whipped people with sjamboks, stabbed some with a spear and knives while damaging several cars.
Liberty Mashanyare is representing the five.
The CCC on Tuesday accused the Central Intelligence Organisation of “hijacking” funeral proceedings after ordering senior party officials to leave, including Settlement Chikwinya, the Kwekwe Central candidate for MP.
Ncube’s family says he will be buried in Lower Gweru when his body is released following the postmortem.
