HARARE – Two armed men made off with US$60,000 after robbing a cash-in-transit van delivering cash to the Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge, police said on Friday.
Six guards from a private security company parked the cash van at the entrance of a security room and were guarding it for the night on December 28 when two men, one armed with a pistol, attacked.
The money was allowances for refugees who live at the camp.
“Two unknown suspects… pounced on the security guards and took from them the motor vehicle keys, keys for the Chubb safe affixed to the vehicle and a mobile phone at gun point,” national police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
“The suspects went on to disarm the security guards of their Norinco pistol with a magazine of eight rounds and a 303 rifle with a magazine of eight rounds. The suspects then opened the safe and stole two trunk boxes loaded with US$60,360 cash.”
Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a wave of violent armed robberies, some of them blamed on rogue soldiers.
