GWERU – Rescuers on Monday recovered two bodies after a vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded Gweru River on Sunday.
Police believe the Izuzu twin cab had six people at the time of the incident at the bridge on the road linking Gweru and Matobo. The police Sub Aqua Unit has been summoned to search for the missing bodies.
“I can confirm that we received news that a vehicle was swept away at 5AM on Sunday. Rescue operations are currently being carried out and we have so far managed to retrieve two bodies,” Midlands police spokesman Inspector Emanuel Mahoko said.
“I would like to appeal to the public to exercise extreme caution and not try to attempt to cross flooded rivers as this could result in loss of lives.”
Heavy rains have been falling across the country and in desperation to get to their destinations, some motorists and pedestrians have attempted to cross flooded rivers with tragic results.
