HARARE – Zimbabwe reported two Covid-19 deaths on Monday, as the country’s coronavirus death toll rose to 36.
The latest deaths were those of a 34-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man from Manicaland Province.
Both died at home, the ministry of health said without providing further information.
There were 192 new Covid-19 cases, the ministry added, of which 189 were local transmissions. Two returnees from South Africa and one from Zambia were the other people who tested positive for the respiratory illness that causes the disease, Covid-19.
Zimbabwe says it has seen 542 recoveries, including 24 on Monday.
Zimbabwe has conducted 54,831 coronavirus lab tests to date, which government critics say is too low to give a clear picture of the disease’s rapid spread inside the country.
Between March 20 when the coronavirus was first reported in Zimbabwe and June 30, Zimbabwe had just seven reported deaths from Covid-19 – but the death toll has grown exponentially in July.
Parliament was forced to close on Monday after two MPs tested positive for the virus.
