HARARE – Four people died and over a dozen others were treated for injuries after two buses collided near a truck stop on the Harare-Mutare highway on Thursday afternoon, police said.
Witnesses said a truck pulling out of the truck stop at Mutangadura failed to give way for a speeding Tenda bus bound for Mutare. The Tenda bus driver attempted to avoid a collision and swerved right, only to be hit on the side by a Phils & Pats bus going in the Harare direction.
The Tenda bus landed on its side while the Phils & Pats bus suffered extensive frontal damage.
Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “The bodies of the victims were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary. The injured were treated at Marondera and some were referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.”
Transport minister Felix Mhona visited the scene and spoke to some of the passengers and locals, who demanded that humps be placed on the road to stop motorists from speeding near the truck stop which is popular for braai.
