HARARE – Police on Thursday arrested Arthur Bosha, a prosecutor based at the Harare Magistrates Court, on corruption allegations after he consented to bail for an armed robbery suspect.

Bosha is the second prosecutor to be arrested after Tapiwa Kasema was detained in December for consenting to bail for Taj Abdul, accused of masterminding a string of armed robberies across the country.

The Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) which led the arrest of Bosha is also seeking the arrest of a third prosecutor, Douglas Chesa.

Bosha consented to bail for Musafare Mupamhanga while Chesa did not oppose bail for Douglas Mutenda. Mupamhanga and Mutenda are alleged to be Abdul’s gang members.

The National Prosecuting Authority said the prosecutors ignored existing guidelines for consenting to bail which require that consent should be approved by a senior law officer.

Thabani Mpofu, the head of SACU, said Bosha would appear in court on Friday.

Abdul, Mupamhanga and Mutenda were all re-arrested on fresh charges after obtaining bail at the High Court.

Police have reportedly taken the unprecedented step of interviewing Justice Benjamin Chikowero, who grated Abdul bail, as a potential witness in Kasema’s corruption trial.
